Traditional Tea-Grass Integrated System in Shizuoka

In Kakegawa and surrounding region, Shizuoka’s specialty tea has been produced using a unique traditional tea cultivating method called the“Chagusaba method”. Grass, such as pampas grass in the semi-natural grasslands (Chagusaba) dotted around the tea gardens, is reaped, and laid out in the tea gardens during autumn and winter. The active use of the grass is indispensable to local tea production, as it enriches the soil of tea gardens, and prevents soil erosion, At the same time, grass has been used in offerings for prosperity and for a good harvest in rituals in the traditional culture of the region. The active use of the grass has enabled Chagusaba to be maintained and, as a result, its many types of rare species still exist today.

静岡の茶草場農法

静岡県の掛川市、菊川市、島田市、牧之原市、川根本町の4市1町では、県の特産品であるお茶を「茶草場(ちゃぐさば)農法」と呼ばれる独自の伝 統 農 法 で 栽 培 。こ の「 静 岡 の 茶 草 場 農 法 」が F A O( 国 連 食 料 農 業 機 関 )に よ り 世 界 農 業 遺 産 に 認 定 さ れ て い ま す 。茶 畑 の 周 り の 草 地( 茶 草 場 )か ら 草 を 刈 り 取 り 茶 畑 に 敷 く こ と で 、土 壌 が 豊 か に な り 、樹 勢 の よ い 美 味 し い お 茶 に な る と 言 わ れ て い ま す 。草 刈 に よ っ て 維 持 さ れ て き た 草 地 に は 、 希少な生物が多数生息しています。美味しいお茶を作るための農家の取組が、同時に豊かな動植物を育んでいます。
